Thread seal tape, commonly known as Teflon tape, is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film used in plumbing to seal pipe threads. It prevents leaks by filling gaps in threaded connections and facilitates smoother assembly and disassembly.
Key Features:
- Material: Made from PTFE, offering low friction and chemical resistance.
- Thickness: Typically around 3.5 mils, comparable to standard paper thickness.
- Temperature Range: Effective from -270°C to 260°C, suitable for various environments.
Color Codes and Applications:
- White: Standard tape for water pipes up to 3/8 inch in diameter.
- Yellow: Double-density tape for gas lines, meeting standards for propane, butane, and natural gas.
- Pink: Extra-thick tape for water lines, often used by pipe fitters.
- Green: Grease-free tape for oxygen lines.
- Gray: High-density tape for stainless steel fittings, preventing seizing and galling.
- Blue: Professional-grade tape for high-pressure gas, air, and water lines.
Application Guidelines:
- Surface Preparation: Clean threads to remove dirt and old sealant.
- Wrapping Technique: Start wrapping on the second thread, moving in the direction of the threads, with 2–3 wraps typically sufficient.
- Assembly: Tighten the connection securely, avoiding over-tightening to prevent damage.
When Not to Use Teflon Tape:
- Compression Fittings: These rely on pressure to seal and don't require additional sealant.
- Flare Fittings: Designed to be self-sealing without tape.
- Plastic Fittings: Tape can cause over-tightening and potential damage.
- Gas Lines: Standard white tape is unsuitable; use yellow gas-rated tape instead.
Using the appropriate type of thread seal tape and applying it correctly ensures leak-free and durable connections in various plumbing applications.
